THE LOWDOWN

ILYA IVASHKA

World number 73 Ilya Ivashka stunned eighth-seed Hubert Hurkacz in the second round to bring attention to his improving recent form and a four-set victory over Lorenzo Musetti on Saturday was just as impressive without the element of surprise. The 28-year-old has reached the round of 16 at the US Open for a first time, emulating his run at Wimbledon last season.

JANNIK SINNER

World number 13 Jannik Sinner came back from a set down to oust an impressive home hopeful in Brandon Nakashima under the lights and against the crowd on Saturday night for a hugely impressive victory. The 21-year-old beat Carlos Alcaraz at this stage of Wimbledon back in July in one of the best performances by any player on tour this year and he took that level into a five-set thriller against eventual champion Novak Djokovic to win the first two sets before defeat. Sinner has emulated his best run in New York by reaching the second week but he is one win away from reaching all four major quarter-finals.

THE PREDICTION

Unassuming Jannik Sinner could have reached all four Grand Slam quarter-finals by the tender age of 21 with a win here in his first tour meeting with Ilya Ivashka, a huge achievement that suggests his hype is wholly founded. Ilya Ivashka is an excellent player at his best and tough to knock off the court when on song, especially on a hardcourt, but Sinner has passed some significant tests at this level this season and he has yet to reach top gear in New York. Sets could easily go both ways here, so take the Italian to win outright.
