THE PREDICTION

World number 37 Cristian Garin came back from a set down to beat the 30th seed Tommy Paul in a high-quality first round clash. The Chilean should be seeded at Roland-Garros but he has suffered a fairly dire first half of the season by his standards, with recent runs to the semi-finals of the Houston Open and quarter-finals at the Italian Open on clay more like it. Garin’s five career ATP titles have come on his favoured clay and he reached the round of 16 here last season before defeat to Daniil Medvedev. World number 50 Ilya Ivashka is a solid all-court baseliner who overcame a decent challenge by Benoit Paire on Monday, beating the enigmatic Frenchman in four sets. Ivashka took a set from Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Barcelona Open and more recently beat Denis Shapovalov at last week’s Geneva Open for some impressive performances on clay but backing a resurgent Garin to win this first meeting is a reasonable risk.
