THE PREDICTION
World number 53 Ilya Ivashka provided one of the shocks of the tournament by ousting in-form Tommy Paul in three sets on Friday. The Belarussian set a career-high ATP world ranking of 40th just last month but after losing plenty of ranking points from his exploits at last season’s Wimbledon it is back to the grind ahead of his favoured portion of the year across the North American hardcourt swing. World number 30 Alex de Minaur should be ranked higher after a run to the round of 16 at SW19 this month but the Aussie is making great strides back towards the top 20 now with a second semi-final in three tournaments. De Minaur came back from a set down to beat Adrian Mannarino on Friday and on paper he should be capable of a similar performance over Ivashka in this first meeting. However, 28-year-old Ivashka’s win over Paul throws a fair amount of doubt over this semi-final and that makes taking De Minaur to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable finalists a sensible decision.
