World number one Iga Swiatek has been critical of the US Open’s balls, different for WTA players, this week but she put that aside to blast past Jasmine Paolini on Tuesday. The 21-year-old claimed her second Grand Slam title this season at the end of a remarkable run of titles, six in total, including four Masters titles in Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome. Notably, Swiatek has yet to win a WTA title in the ‘second-half’ of a season , that is to say any tournament after Roland-Garros, but it should not take long for her to rectify that as the clear-and-present best player on the WTA tour. 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens remains one of the most talented of her generation but the world number four has struggled, more so in recent years, to maintain her best level consistently enough to stay inside the top 20.
The current world number 51 needed a comeback performance to beat Greet Minnen on Tuesday and with a recent straight-sets defeat to Iga Swiatek just two weeks ago in Cincinnati this looks a step-up too far, too fast. Stephens at 100% could win this match but Swiatek should be able to repeat her feat from Cincinnati here with a straight-sets win.
