World number one Iga Swiatek is through to a fifth-successive final on tour this season after dominating Aryna Sabalenka for just three conceded games on Saturday. The 20-year-old is riding a 27-match winning streak after winning three Masters titles on the spin at the Qatar Open, Indian Wells and the Miami Open as well as the recent Stuttgart Open on her favoured clay. Swiatek is the defending champion in Rome where least season she handed Karolina Pliskova a double bagel in the final.
ONS JABEUR
World number seven Ons Jabeur is only the fifth woman to reach back-to-back finals at the Madrid Open and Italian Open after overcoming a spirited fightback from Daria Kasatkina to beat the Russian in three sets. The 27-year-old won her first WTA title at the Birmingham Classic last season but she is now riding a nine-match winning streak from her biggest triumph to date after winning last week’s Madrid Open for a first Masters title. Jabeur is aiming to become the first Arab to qualify for the WTA Finals after just missing out last season and she will set a new career-high of at least sixth no matter the outcome here.
THE PREDICTION
This is the final the Italian Open deserves between the two most in-form players on the WTA. Iga Swiatek’s 27-match winning streak is a seriously daunting challenge for Ons Jabeur but the Tunisian is the player with the more recent title behind her and she has twice fought back against excellent clay-courters this week, matching her wonderful variety with a new steelier resolve. Jabeur leads Swiatek 2-1 in their head-to-head record after winning their two most recent matches at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open last season but this first clay meeting is likely to favour the defending champion in Rome. Swiatek looks largely unstoppable at the moment but Jabeur will be the biggest threat to her streak yet in this form. Back the world number one to win outright.
