THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek looked in excellent shape on Thursday with a straight-sets victory over Sloane Stephens, conceding just five games to the 2017 US Open champion. The 21-year-old claimed her second Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros this summer, after taking her first as a relative unknown in Paris back in 2020, at the end of a 37-match winning streak that saw her take six WTA titles in a row including four Masters events. The Indian Wells and Miami Open champion should fare well in New York but recent form has been below her very lofty par and this could end up more difficult than it should be if Lauren Davis can repeat her level from Thursday. The world number 105 came back from a set to love down to beat 28th-seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 10-5 in the deciding tiebreak and she will attract plenty of support as a gutsy American underdog here. The sensible move remains backing Swiatek to blast through this in straight sets like much of her season but a small one-off on Davis to snatch a set could be the shrewd move.
