World number one Iga Swiatek is riding a 21-match winning streak stretching back to February after winning three back-to-back Masters titles at the Qatar Open, Indian Wells and Miami Open and a further WTA title at the Stuttgart Open. The 20-year-old is the defending champion here in Rome after handing Karolina Pliskova a double bagel in the final last season and she should be fit and firing here after missing out the Madrid Open to recover. Swiatek burst onto the scene in 2020 when she raced to the title without dropping a set, becoming the first Pole to win a Grand Slam.
ELENA-GABRIELA RUSE
24-year-old Elena-Gabriela Ruse recovered from an injury in qualifying to come through as a lucky loser for her main draw debut at the Italian Open, where she beat Shelby Rogers from a set down on Tuesday. The Romanian won the Hamburg Open in her first ever WTA final last season before finishing runner-up to Danielle Collins at the Palermo Open a week later, both on clay.
THE PREDICTION
It will be interesting to see how hard and fast world number one Iga Swiatek starts her first match on tour since winning the Stuttgart Open over two weeks ago but it was the right decision to take a break with Roland-Garros incoming. The 20-year-old has dropped just one set in her last 13 matches and a 21-match winning streak will be an ominous wall for Elena-Gabriela Ruse to break down here but backing Swiatek to win outright is the sensible move after a few weeks off the tour.
