World number one Iga Swiatek is through to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the second time this season after a strong straight-sets display over Jessica Pegula on Wednesday. The 21-year-old is riding a 33-match winning streak since claiming her second Masters title at the Qatar Open back in February, with over 100 days since her last defeat. Swiatek has won each of her last five tournaments, including four Masters overall from Qatar, Miami, Indian Wells and Rome. Swiatek won Roland-Garros as a teenager in 2020 without dropping a set.
DARIA KASATKINA
World number 20 Daria Kasatkina overcame fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets on Wednesday, backing up some strong results over the likes of Shelby Rogers and Camila Giorgi. The 25-year-old can break her career-high WTA world ranking of 10th by reaching the final and she has already bettered her Grand Slam record by reaching the semi-finals for a first time. Kasatkina won her first WTA title on clay at the Charleston Open in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
This will be the fifth meeting on tour between Daria Kasatkina and Iga Swiatek in the space of a year but by far the most important. Kasatkina beat Swiatek in their first encounter in three sets, on grass at the Eastbourne International last June, but since then Swiatek has blasted past the Russian in three straight-set victories. In fact, the Pole has beaten Kasatkina three times this season at the Australian Open, the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Qatar Open, conceding just 11 games overall. Kasatkina is coming into some of the best form of her career here, though, and both players favour the clay so backing Swiatek to win outright is more sensible than in two.
