World number one Iga Swiatek dropped a set for the first time since midway through Indian Wells, coming back from a set down to beat an impressive Liudmila Samsonova on Saturday. The 20-year-old will be the better for it in this final but three hours of intensity in the semi-final will see her now 20-match winning streak at its most fragile as she takes on former world number two Aryna Sabalenka. 23-year-old Sabalenka finished runner-up to Ash Barty here last season and after several months in the wilderness on tour she has found similar form to her pomp once again in Stuttgart. A straight-sets victory over Paula Badosa on Saturday is a huge statement to the rest of the WTA that the Belarussian is back and ready to challenge the best once again. Iga Swiatek is the very best at this moment in time and the Pole remains the solid favourite here, especially on clay.
