THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek enjoyed a huge 37-match winning streak from February to early July this season, winning six-straight tournaments including four Masters events from: Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome before culminating with a second Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros However, the 21-year-old has since lost two of her last six matches across Wimbledon and the Poland Open, both to French opposition in Alize Cornet and Carolina Garcia, to hit the rest button ahead of this North American swing. The Pole could hang up her racket now and likely start next season’s clay season at world number one but four of her nine WTA titles have come on hardcourts and she should be considered the tournament favourite here in Toronto.
World number 72 Ajla Tomljanovic is no pushover, though, and far better than her current deflated ranking suggests. The 29-year-old reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon before losing to the eventual champion, for a second year running, in Elena Rybakina and she ousted in-form Veronika Kudermetova in three sets on Tuesday for a huge opening statement at the Canada Masters. Swiatek should still be backed to win in straight sets here but an outright pick would be sensible for an accumulator.
