23-year-old Alex de Minaur moved back into the world’s top 20 this week after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Lyon Open was halted by eventual runner-up Alex Molcan. The Aussie owns five ATP titles to his name but none yet on clay, which comes as a surprise as he has the fast-paced all-court coverage game to excel on this surface. De Minaur could go deep at this tournament with the right draw but a first meeting with Paris’ favourite son is likely to be a serious challenge. World number 74 Hugo Gaston is two different players on tour: a world-beater in Paris and a tricky left-hander elsewhere. The 21-year-old famously reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros in 2020, beating Stan Wawrinka in five sets before losing to Dominic Thiem by the same scoreline. The Frenchman rediscovered that fire at last season’s Paris Masters, where he encouraged some of the fiercest partisan support we have seen on tour for some time in a run to the quarter-finals – beating Carlos Alcaraz before losing to recent US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.
This first meeting could go absolutely anywhere but it should be one of the more exciting first round clashes on offer. Back both players to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance, although on recent form it should be De Minaur finding a way through.
