Former world number three Dominic Thiem entered Roland-Garros in a protected ranking after missing much of the last year on tour with a recurring wrist injury. The 28-year-old won the US Open in 2020 and he is a two-time runner-up to Rafael Nadal here from 2018 and 2019, with the Spaniard ending his run in four of his eight appearances in Paris. Thiem was long touted as the man to win the next French Open not called Nadal or Novak Djokovic as one of the very best on clay in this generation but this year’s edition has surely come too soon as he still seeks a first win in 2022. World number 87 Hugo Dellien is a solid clay specialist capable of upsetting things here with a recent three-set defeat to Hubert Hurkacz rather impressive. The Bolivian has won just one of his three matches at Roland-Garros, though, and the crowd will turn out for Thiem as one of the more popular players on tour. This is very much head versus heart but backing Thiem to win at least two sets seems a sensible call and taking him outright perhaps a hopeful one.
