THE LOWDOWN
World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz is a tough player to pin down in 2022. The Pole brings a 32-15 record into the US Open after a largely erratic season of highs and lows, with his searing title-winning campaign at Halle surrounded on both sides by first-round exits in Stuttgart, Wimbledon and Washington. Hurkacz recently finished runner-up to Pablo Carreno Busta in the Canada Masters final before an early exit to John Isner in Cincinnati. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season but he has struggled at the other majors, with the second round his best showing in New York so far. World number 41 Oscar Otte is back at the US Open hoping to emulate his best run at a Grand Slam after a round of 16 exit to Matteo Berrettini here last season. The German has reached the semi-finals at three tournaments this season, including the ATP 500 Halle Open back in June.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tricky opener for world number 10 Hubert Hurkacz against Oscar Otte, who has made Grand Slam upsets his bread and butter over the last few seasons. Otte took Alexander Zverev and Andy Murray to five sets at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, last season before a breakthrough run here in New York saw him stun Lorenzo Sonego in the first round on his way to the second week. Hurkacz is about as likely to storm through to the semi-finals at the US Open as he is to crash out in the first round. The Pole beat Otte in three sets at Indian Wells back in March, making an outright pick look the sensible option here, but the shrewd move could be taking Otte to win at least a set in his first match back since Wimbledon last month.
