THE PREDICTION
World number 14 Hubert Hurkacz failed to defend his Miami Open title last time out but he went down swinging to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz after defeating Daniil Medvedev in emphatic fashion. The 25-year-old struggled here last season, losing to Dan Evans in comfortable fashion, and he has yet to display much love for the clay on tour. World number 22 Gael Monfils won his first ATP title on clay at the Sopot Open back in 2005 but he has since won 10 on hardcourts, including Adelaide 1 back in January. The Frenchman will receive a hero’s welcome in Monte-Carlo and he is probably just about the favourite here unless Hurkacz finds his very best. The pair have one win apiece against the other at hardcourt Masters tournaments in 2019 and this should come very tight indeed. Take Monfils to win at least a set as the slight favourite with the crowd’s backing.

Hubert Hurkacz will face lucky loser Hugo Dellien on Monday. The Bolivian is a handful on clay and a second chance could give him an extra level in this first meeting with Hurkacz. Backing Hurkacz to win outright is a suitably sensible call here.
