World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz needs a remarkable next few weeks on tour if he is to sneak one of the last three remaining ATP Finals places in Turin next month. The 25-year-old overcame a hugely challenging Vienna opener on Tuesday by ousting in-form Frances Tiafoe in three sets but it does not get much easier here against Emil Ruusuvuori, who upset him only recently at the Citi Open back in August. Hurkacz almost immediately avenged that defeat in Montreal but Ruusuvuori has taken at least a set in both of their matches so far and the world number 43 looked in solid shape on Tuesday, beating Lorenzo Sonego in comfortable straight sets. The Finn made the semi-finals of the Stockholm Open last week, also beating Tiafoe before losing to the top seed in Stefanos Tsitsipas. The shrewd move could be taking the 23-year-old to earn at least a set here but, realistically, Hurkacz should be winning this match at his best.
