THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Hubert Hurkacz was hard to pin down at the Madrid Open last week with some excellent performances and some hiccups, including a lacklustre display in a straight-sets defeat to Novak Djokovic. The Pole has still reached at least the quarter-finals of his last three tournaments, all Masters, and furthermore the semi-finals at the Miami Open as defending champion and the monte-Carlo Open. This is a tough opener, though, against a suddenly resurgent David Goffin who can hold his head very high indeed after a three-set epic against Rafael Nadal in the round of 16 of Madrid last week. The 31-year-old won the sixth ATP title of his career at the Marrakech Open last month and it remains to be seen if he will push on from his heroics against Nadal or start a little flat in Rome. The former is likelier than the latter but Hurkacz remains the favourite to eventually come through what could be the match of the round. Back the Pole to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
