HUBERT HURKACZ
World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz beat the top seed Daniil Medvedev in two vastly impressive sets as he defends his Miami Open title with aplomb. The 25-year-old is also through to the Men’s Doubles final on Saturday alongside John Isner after the pair knocked out the blockbuster pairing of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis. Hurkacz so far owns four ATP titles but perhaps his best achievement yet is reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon last summer, where be beat Medvedev for the first time before a straight-sets victory over Roger Federer.
CARLOS ALCARAZ
18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 14th after he came back from a set down to beat an inspired Miomir Kecmanovic on Thursday night. The Spaniard took Rafael Nadal to three sets at this stage of Indian Wells two weeks ago before defeat there and he can get within 30 ranking points of breaking the top 10, already, if he lifts the trophy on Sunday. Alcaraz won his second ATP title last month at the Rio Open and he famously stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas en-route to the quarter-finals of last season’s US Open.
THE PREDICTION
Hubert Hurkacz shocked Andrey Rublev at this stage of the Miami Open last season before beating then rising star Jannik Sinner in the final but he faces an even tougher, even younger riser now in Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard is likely to break into the top 10 before his 19th birthday in May with the clay swing approaching and both of his titles so far coming on the surface. Clearly, the teenager is a future world number one, multiple Grand Slam champion and all the rest but Hurkacz’s defeat of Daniil Medvedev must stand up to be counted. The defending champion’s fine work in the doubles is clearly exhibiting in his singles play as perhaps the best player on the ATP tour at the net and this first meeting with Alcaraz promises to be a proper thriller.
In many ways this should be the final of the Miami Open but whoever wins this more than likely lifts the trophy on Sunday. There is probably a set in this for both players given their levels this week and that makes backing Alcaraz to win at least one of them the sensible move. Hurkacz is deceptively strong but if the support for Alcaraz becomes too one-sided the Spaniard can navigate a way through to the final.
