THE LOWDOWN

HUBERT HURKACZ

World number 14 Hubert Hurkacz laboured to a three-set victory over Hugo Dellien on Tuesday on what is notably his weakest surface. The 25-year-old still managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open last timeout before losing to Grigor Dimitrov in three and he made an excellent go at defending his Miami Open title in a tight straight-sets exit to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz before that. Hurkacz won the Miami Open Men’s Doubles title alongside John Isner and the pair have rolled into Madrid on a now five-match winning streak.

ALEJANDRO DAVIDOVICH FOKINA

World number 29 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Lloyd Harris on Monday as he continues his excellent form on clay. The 22-year-old reached a first Masters final last month with a stunning campaign at the Monte-Carlo Open that ended in defeat to the defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. Davidovich Fokina reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season and he looks a serious threat to anybody across this clay swing.

THE PREDICTION

This could be the sleeper hit of the day between Hubert Hurkacz and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with both players recently excelling at Masters events. Hurkacz leads this head-to-head record 2-1 after winning their most recent meeting at the Cincinnati Open last season but Davidovich Fokina is the better player on clay and a recent finalist who has beaten the likes of Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz and Grigor Dimitrov on the surface. Three sets seem likely here, so taking ADF to win at least one as the likelier of two very capable winners seems sensible.
