HOLGER RUNE
19-year-old Holger Rune passed a serious test of his future credentials at the top of the sport on Saturday night with a straight-sets victory over Hugo Gaston made all the more difficult by the partisan atmosphere of a broiling night match in Paris. The Dane prospect will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 31st after the feat, not long after winning his first ATP title at last month’s Munich Open. Rune is yet to drop a set at Roland-Garros on an incredible debut.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Mikael Ymer on Saturday, a player he knows well from their days in juniors. The 23-year-old had so far struggled at Roland-Garros, conceding three sets over his first two rounds, but he should be the better for it as he moves into the business end of the major. Tsitsipas successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month for a second Masters title on clay and he finished runner-up here to Novak Djokovic last season in his first Grand Slam final.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Monday between rising star Holger Rune and last year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas. This will be the most serious challenge of Tsitsipas’ route to another final in this portion of the draw with the likes of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz all set to battle it out in the other half, and Rune will be conscious of the Greek’s slip-ups this campaign. A first meeting between the two suggests sets will go both ways, with Tsitsipas often struggling to work players out on first impressions, but the Greek should eventually find a way through. This is tight, though, and backing both players to win at least a set seems the sensible pick. You could add Tsitsipas to win to that for a riskier combo. You could also consider this match a pretty good candidate to see five sets.
