THE PREDICTION
19-year-old Holger Rune set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 18th this week after finishing runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Swiss Indoors Open on Sunday. The Dane saw a nine-match winning streak snapped after claiming his second ATP title of the season at the Stockholm Open, with huge results over the likes of Cam Norrie, Alex de Minaur (twice), Stefanos Tsitsipas and Roberto Bautista Agut suggesting he is the clear favourite in this first meeting with Stan Wawrinka.
However, there are a few factors that make this a tricky match to call. Firstly, the last time Rune lost a high-profile match the teenager suffered a huge lapse in confidence that saw a losing streak of seven stretch from the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in June to the Citi Open in early August. Secondly, former world number three Wawrinka has impressed in recent weeks, with victories over the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud seeing him reach the semi-finals of the Moselle Open and quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors in similar conditions to here. The Swiss also has a strong affinity with Paris, where he won the second of his three Grand Slam titles at Roland-Garros in 2015 to break up Rafael Nadal’s chokehold on the tournament. The crowd will likely pull in the veteran’s favour here and that makes backing him to earn at least a set the shrewd move – albeit well away from an accumulator.
