THE PREDICTION
19-year-old Holger Rune finally snapped a devastating seven-match losing streak, trailing all the way back from his incredible run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros, with a straight-sets victory over Benoit Paire. The Dane claimed his maiden ATP title on his favoured clay at the Munich Open in early May and whilst a career-best ranking win over Stefanos Tsitsipas was impressive in Paris he has yet to really establish himself on grass or hardcourts. 23-year-old J.J. Wolf will see this first meeting with Rune as a big opportunity and he has enjoyed his best season on tour yet, entering Washington this week on a career-high ATP world ranking of 99th. The American will be well-backed by the home crowd here and that could irk Rune, who is very much a teenager built on unwavering self-belief. Wolf has already ousted some strong opposition in Taro Daniel and Denis Shapovalov this week but Rune’s win will be a huge weight off his shoulders. A one-off on Wolf to cause an upset seems reasonable here but take him to win at least a set inside an accumulator.
