World number 31 Holger Rune has enjoyed excellent results on his favoured clay this season, most notably winning a maiden ATP title at the Munich Open and stunning Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros, but he needs to improve his game on a hardcourt. The 19-year-old received a bye to the round of 16 as the fourth seed in Metz but he could probably have done with the first round fixture to get bedded into the tournament as he faces a home hopeful in Benjamin Bonzi who will be well-versed in indoor conditions from his long career on the Challenger circuit. World number 61 Bonzi got his Moselle Open campaign underway strongly by ousting Ugo Humbert in three sets on Tuesday and he will be well-backed at home against a divisive character in Rune. The Dane will likely end up with the more illustrious career but this first meeting should go Bonzi’s way.
