World number 79 Holger Rune is a young clay specialist from Denmark who should one day find himself in the footsteps of Casper Ruud as a dominative force on this surface. The 18-year-old qualified in strong fashion to make his second appearance at the Monte-Carlo Open after a straight sets defeat to Ruud this time last season. World number 30 Aslan Karatsev started 2022 off with a searing campaign at the Sydney Tennis Classic to win his third ATP title but since then he has seriously struggled for consistency, losing seven of his last 11 matches on tour. The 28-year-old can include Rune amongst his victories, though, as he beat the Dane in their first encounter at the Open 13 back in February. The Russian is better on the clay than some might expect, with a victory over Novak Djokovic at the Serbia Open last season a stand-out, but backing him to earn at least a set here as the likelier winner looks a suitably cautious pick here.
