24-year-old Taylor Fritz set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 11th this week despite claiming his last victory on tour at the Cincinnati Open in August, although he did beat Cam Norrie at the Laver Cup and Alexander Bublik in the Davis Cup Group stages. The third seed rectified that on Wednesday with a fairly choppy three-set victory over James Duckworth to get his Japan Open campaign underway and he looks like one of the outside favourites for the title as one of only a few players to have beaten fifth-seed Nick Kyrgios this season. World number 253 Hiroki Moriya qualified for the main draw of the Japan Open as a lucky loser but he made the most of the opportunity on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over fellow qualifier Yuta Shimizu. The 31-year-old looks set for a rude awakening here, though, with Fritz likely to win a match that sees less than 17.5 games played.
