30-year-old Heather Watson was left hanging overnight after poor light saw her second round match with Qiang Wang paused at 7-5, 5-4 until Wednesday afternoon, where she completed the job admirably. The Brit is through to the third round of Wimbledon for a fourth time in her career and she will be well-backed by the home crowd as a vastly popular former British number one in this tough clash with Kaja Juvan. The Slovenian looks to be coming into her own this summer as a player who has long shown the potential. A run to the Strasbourg Open final went former world number one Angelique Kerber’s way by the slightest of margins in a marathon thriller back in May and she upset in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia in the first round on Monday for a statement of intent.
Juvan beat Watson in straight sets in their only previous meeting in the first round last season’s US Open but this could come a lot closer with the crowd all pulling in the Brit’s direction. The sensible move is backing Juvan to win at least a set as the likelier victor but realistically she should eventually find a way through.
