25-year-old Daria Kasatkina set a new career-high WTA world ranking of ninth earlier this month after winning the fifth title of her career at the Silicon Valley Classic. The 25-year-old lost back-to-back openers in Toronto and Cincinnati to tough opposition in Bianca Andreescu and Amanda Anisimova but she should be considered a genuine threat to the top order in New York after a run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in June. Kasatkina claimed her second title of the year at the Granby Open on Saturday, overcoming a fairly weak draw with authority as the top seed there.
THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Harriet Dart set a career-high WTA world ranking of 84th this summer after a run to the quarter-finals at the Eastbourne International, backing up a surprise run to the round of 16 at Indian Wells back in March. The Brit would have fared a decent chance of making the second or even third round with a kinder draw but a first meeting with in-form Daria Kasatkina looks a step too far. After her Granby win, Kasatkina has the kind of momentum that could take her all the way in New York. The Russian should be winning this in straight sets to extend her streak to six.
