THE LOWDOWN
Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov reached the semi-finals here back in 2019 before defeat to then eventual runner-up, and now reigning champion, Daniil Medvedev. The 31-year-old won the ATP Finals in 2017 to cap off his best season tour but he has since reached just one tour final, losing to Roger Federer at the Rotterdam Open in 2018, and he takes a poor 20-18 record to Flushing Meadows this year. Former world number 21 Steve Johnson has only made it past the second round on one occasion at the US Open but the 32-year-old reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2016 on his favoured grass. Each of Johnson’s four ATP titles have come on US soil, most recently the Hall of Fame Open in 2018.
THE PREDICTION
Grigor Dimitrov leads Steve Johnson 5-3 in their head-to-head record after also drawing each other in the first round of Wimbledon last month, where an injury saw the Bulgarian retire from the second set. Before that, Dimitrov claimed four wins in a row on hardcourts and despite his poor recent form it is hard to see Johnson win this fixture by conventional methods. As a rule, leave Dimitrov’s matches out of an accumulator but otherwise back him to win this outright. The best option could be leaving this alone altogether until we see which version of the former world number three has come to New York.
