THE LOWDOWN

GRIGOR DIMITROV

World number 20 Grigor Dimitrov beat Brandon Nakashima in straight sets on Tuesday to get his Italian Open campaign underway steadily. The 30-year-old will be sick of the sight of Stefanos Tsitsipas after losing in his previous two tournaments to the Greek in the round of 16 at last week’s Madrid Open and the same stage of the Barcelona Open before it. Dimitrov almost faced Tsitsipas at the Monte-Carlo Open but he lost in the semi-finals in three sets to eventual runner-up Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas lost in three sets to Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals of last week’s Madrid Open as he continues to regain his previous level on clay. The 23-year-old was the man to beat on this surface this time last season after winning his first Masters title at the Monte-Carlo Open, which he successfully defended last month. Tsitsipas finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros last year and looks an outside runner in Paris later this month behind usual suspects Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and new elite star Carlos Alcaraz.

THE PREDICTION

It could be third time lucky for Grigor Dimitrov as he faces Stefanos Tsitsipas for a third-successive tournament but it would be a surprise to see anything other than a solid win for the Greek, who certainly has a formula for this particular head-to-head. The 23-year-old leads 4-1 overall and 3-0 on clay, with Dimitrov yet to win even a set against him on this surface. The Bulgarian has the potential for occasional flurries of world-beating form but he could be forgiven for coming into this clash with a resigned sense of fate. Back Tsitsipas to win outright in an accumulator, or in straight sets otherwise.
