THE PREDICTION

World number 20 Grigor Dimitrov enjoyed a rare burst of form at the Monte-Carlo Open last month with victories over Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz taking him to the semi-finals before a three-set defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 30-year-old won the 2014 Bucharest Open for his only title on clay from a career total of eight ATP titles but the conditions in Madrid reward an aggressive game that he can occasionally find on tour. World number 64 Maxime Cressy could be one to watch this week, though, with a serve and volley playstyle that should really suit the altitude at the Madrid Open. 24-year-old Cressy qualified well this weekend and he beat Dimitrov in straight sets back in January to reach his first ATP tour final, where he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Melbourne 2. The American is well capable of winning this but Dimitrov’s recent Monte-Carlo form makes this match a tricky one to call. Back the Bulgarian to win at least a set inside an accumulator but consider a one-off on Cressy to cause an upset here.
