THE PREDICTION

This will be a really interesting rematch in the first round of Roland-Garros after Marcos Giron stunned Grigor Dimitrov at this very stage last season. 28-year-old Giron is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 49th after an excellent run to the round of 16 at the Italian Open last week, where he beat a top player on clay in Diego Schwartzman before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. In fairness to world number 20 Dimitrov, the Bulgarian was two sets up this time last year before Giron responded and an injury forced the Bulgarian out of the fourth set. Former world number three Dimitrov has found some excellent form on clay this swing but at the same time he still feels prone to upsets whenever he takes to court. The compromise here looks to be taking Dimitrov to win at least two sets as the likelier of two capable winners. As a rule, never include Grigor Dimitrov’s matches in an accumulator.
