THE PREDICTION
World number 19 Grigor Dimitrov had to retire from his last match before the US Open last week but it looked precautionary after a straight-sets victory over Steve Johnson on Tuesday. The 31-year-old is one of the most unpredictable players on the ATP tour, just as likely to blast through to the semi-finals with his intermittent brand of lights-out tennis as he is to crash out here in straight sets to a tough opponent in Brandon Nakashima. 21-year-old Nakashima should be ranked much higher than his current world number 69 after reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month and he has struggled to overcome tougher opponents since. A straight-sets victory over qualifier Pavel Kotov should settle some nerves but Dimitrov won their first meeting in straight sets at the Italian Open back in May and if he is fit and firing he should be coming through this second. Nakashima is well capable of taking this to four, and the longer the match goes the better chance he has of winning, so it may be worth waiting for in-play here to see the lay of the land. Otherwise back Dimitrov to win at least two sets as the likelier of two capable victors.
