Former world number three Sloane Stephens won her Grand Slam title here in 2017 in a famous final with Madison Keys and she reached the quarter-finals a year later, the same year she finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros. The 29-year-old won her seventh WTA title earlier this year at the Guadalajara Open and she reached the quarter-finals in Paris back in June on her favoured clay. Stephens will always be a threat in New York and her brief flurries of world-beating form come almost totally out of the blue, making her as likely to crash out in the first round as blast through to the semi-finals here.
THE PREDICTION
World number 109 Greet Minnen has drawn one of the shorter straws in this tough opener with a former champion in Stephens. The 25-year-old took a set off Daria Kasatkina in the first round at the Granby Open this week before defeat to suggest she could cause some problems here but Stephens should be winning this first encounter in straight sets.
