THE LOWDOWN
Great Britain could not make home advantage count on Wednesday in a tight defeat to main Group D rivals the United States, with all three matches requiring deciders. Davis Cup enthusiast Dan Evans just lost out in an entertaining opener with in-form Tommy Paul before world number eight Cam Norrie came back from a set down to beat Taylor Fritz in impressive fashion. Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury played doubles, with Neal Skupski expected to make way for the former world number one, but after going a set up in a fiercely contested match they were eventually driven out by Jack Sock and Salisbury’s tour partner Rajeev Ram.
The Netherlands made full use of their sudden embarrassment of riches after years of underpowered Davis Cup teams, with world number 48 Tallon Griekspoor and number 35 Botic van de Zandschulp both beating their Kazakh counterparts in three sets on Tuesday. The surprising result came in the doubles dead rubber as Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop lost out in three sets also but they will be the better for it moving forward and remain a suitable duo if any deciders are required.
THE PREDICTION
Great Britain bring a stacked line-up to the Davis Cup group stage sin Glasgow and that creates its own problems in a selection headache for captain Leon Smith. Both Dan Evans and Cam Norrie performed well on Wednesday despite coming down on either sides of a result and the unit as a whole should be extra motivated following a tight loss to give the home fans something to get behind on Friday. Evans should have enough to beat Tallon Griekspoor in the opening match but Leon Smith must be mulling over bringing in Andy Murray for this battle after the Brit beat Griekspoor at the Davis Cup Finals back in 2019. Meanwhile, certified top option Cam Norrie will be confident of beating Botic van de Zandschulp, particularly with home advantage, after conceding just three games to the Dutchman at the Canada Masters last month. Given that whomever Great Britain throws out in the doubled, decider or not, should be more than capable of taking that victory Great Britain can be backed to come through the outright winners here.
