THE LOWDOWN
Great Britain have underperformed this week as the host nation in Glasgow, losing to the US and Netherlands 1-2 in both ties to crash out with a tie remaining. Dan Evans got GB underway well against Tallon Grekspoor on Friday to set-up a likely victory before world number eight Cam Norrie stuttered to defeat against Botic van De Zandschulp in a reversal of the pair’s fortunes against the United States. Despite playing well in both ties, Captain Leon Smith’s doubles gamble in playing Andy Murray alongside world number one Joe Salisbury instead of world number three Neal Skupski has been called into question after the pair lost a second-successive match in three tight sets.
Kazakhstan looked to be the weakest side in Group D but they have fought well to take their chances when possible, also losing their opening two ties 1-2. However, they lost both ties 0-2 before coming back to snatch the doubles deciders in both occasions against the Netherlands and the US most recently, with Alexander Bublik and Aleksandr Nedovyesov likely to trouble Murray and Salisbury in this dead rubber. Bublik took Taylor Fritz to three sets before defeat in a match that could have blown the whole group wide open.
THE PREDICTION
This could end up a fairly drab encounter in Glasgow with the wind knocked out of Great Britain’s sails. Both Dan Evans and Cam Norrie have lost a match they should have won this week so far but the doubles pairing of Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury have failed to seal ties despite good performances, which is perhaps more concerning. It will be too little too late on Sunday but with Dan Evans well capable of beating Mikhail Kukushkin and Cam Norrie expected to oust an admittedly unpredictable foe in Alexander Bublik the tie should be over this time around before the doubles. Back Great Britain to win outright, although they should be able to win 3-0 to lament what might have been.
