THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Hubert Hurkacz reached the quarter-finals of two clay Masters events last month, at the Monte-Carlo Open and Madrid Open, but he has struggled against the top players on what remains his least effective surface. The 25-year-old won his first Masters title at last season’s Miami Open but he failed to defend it this year in a semi-final defeat to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. Hurkacz’s four ATP titles have come on hardcourts so far but his greatest run to date was reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season.

World number 215 Giulio Zeppieri has impressed in qualifying matches recently, beating Maxime Cressy and Alex Molcan in the Italian Open qualifiers a few weeks ago and fellow Italian Andreas Seppi this week to make his Roland-Garros debut. The fact that Hurkacz was caught out at this stage last season by a then unknown Botic van de Zandschulp suggests this could be a tricky start for the Pole but backing him to beat the qualifier outright is a sensible concession.
