THE PREDICTION

World number eight Garbine Muguruza is the reigning WTA Finals champion from last November but she has so far struggled to find that level in 2022. The Spaniard is yet to drop a set at the Qatar Open this week in strong displays against Sorana Cirstea and Madison Brengle but recent defeats at her last three tournaments to Daria Kasatkina, Alize Cornet and Veronika Kudermetova suggest that this test should prove too tough against possibly the most in-form player on the WTA tour. World number 13 Jelena Ostapenko is riding an eight-match winning streak from her title-winning campaign at the Dubai Tennis Championships last week, where she beat four Grand Slam champions in Sofia Kenin, Iga Swiatek, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep en-route to a storming victory over Veronika Kudermetova on Saturday. The 24-year-old, a Roland-Garros champion herself in 2017, beat the reigning Roland-Garros champion and Qatar Open second seed Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets on Wednesday to back-up a brilliant win over Amanda Anisimova.

The pair have not faced each other since 2017, when Muguruza won her third match against the Latvian to lead 3-1, but taking Ostapenko to win at least a set as the likelier victor here is the sensible move. Backing the 24-year-old to continue her hot streak with an outright win is a reasonable option here.
