Former world number 10 Garbine Muguruza has been enduring a torrid season on tour, with a poor 9-14 record coming into the US Open. The 28-year-old remains inside the top 10 for now but she is being almost entirely propped up by her WTA Finals win at the end of last season, where she was in exhilarating form that makes this year’s level all the more baffling. Muguruza is a two-time Grand Slam champion from Roland-Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon a year later but New York remains the only major final left to reach after she finished runner-up to Sofia Kenin in Melbourne back in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
World number 58 Clara Tauson remains a rising star despite her tough 2022 season so far. The 19-year-old won two WTA titles last season to set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd but she has struggled with fitness for much of this year and she desperately needs a run of uninterrupted matches to get back to that level. This looks a really intriguing opener for both players considering Muguruza’s continuing problems this year and Tauson will be up for the challenge of an early upset on the biggest stage. Muguruza should be coming through this first encounter but back the Dane to win at least a set as a potentially shrewd one-off.
