World number 20 Gael Monfils needed three sets to overcome Pedro Martinez on Tuesday but it was an encouraging performance from the Frenchman in his first match back since early May. The 35-year-old is certainly in the twilight of his career now but he will always be a handful on a hardcourt, as proven at the start of the season when he won an 11th career ATP title before a storming run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. This could well be a proper thriller on Wednesday between two contrasting playstyles as Monfils meets Maxime Cressy for a first time. Serve-and-volley throwback Cressy ousted Aslan Karatsev in straight sets on Tuesday in keeping with his excellent form this season, with three tour finals reached so far including at the recent Hall of Fame Open where he claimed his maiden ATP title. Monfils at his best should reduce the efficacy of Cressy’s volleying but the American is just as likely to blast through the Frenchman. Back Cressy to win at least a set here and leave the winner up to chance.
