World number 30 Francisco Cerundolo has enjoyed plenty of excellent results over the last few months with wins over Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cam Norrie and most recently Casper Ruud on clay in Barcelona and it has needed top 30 opposition to oust him from his last four tournaments. That suggests that this first meeting with fellow Argentine Pedro Cachin will be a relatively comfortable one but world number 67 Cachin conceded just five games in his first round victory over Abdullah Shelbayh to get some important practice in Madrid’s unique conditions under his belt. 24-year-old Cerundolo lost in the first round of the Chile Open back in February in reasonably similar high-altitude conditions and it is just worth keeping that in mind before making a decision here. Cerundolo should be coming through in straight sets but consider an outright pick for a promising accumulator.
