World number 29 Francisco Cerundolo received a bye to the round of 16 of the Gijon Open as the fourth seed here but he could do with a break as he takes a five-match losing streak with him. The 24-year-old has not won a match on tour since transitioning from clay to hardcourts this summer but a run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open back in March is proof that he is more than capable of tuning his form around on this surface. World number 153 Manuel Guinard claimed just the third tour-level victory of his career on Tuesday when Fabio Fognini retired from the third set of their match. The 26-year-old fares a decent chance at the upset here given Cerundolo’s poor form but the Argentine should realistically be able to edge through even if he is under par. This match looks a potential coupon buster, though, and perhaps the shrewd move is taking Guinard to snatch at least a set.
