23-year-old Francisco Cerundolo set a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th late last month after winning his first ATP title at the Bastad Open. The current world number 27 has been in excellent form in this breakthrough season on tour, with a run to the semi-finals at the Miami Open back in March proving him more than just an excellent clay-courter. World number 28 Karen Khachanov has played on grass, clay and hardcourts over his last three tournaments with quarter-finals reached at Halle and the Hamburg Open before a shock straight-sets exit at the Citi Open to eventual runner-up Yoshihito Nishioka. The 26-year-old is well capable if beating most players on his day but at the same time he can be found out a lot more often than he used to be on court and a first meeting with Cerundolo feels dangerous to the baseliner. Cerundolo’s game plan will be to limit rallies against Khachanov’s rock-solid defence and Argentine’s early balls should be effective here.
