23-year-old Francisco Cerundolo will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 51st after going a break up in the first set of his quarter-final with Jannik Sinner before the Italian retired from the match. It was a big break of luck for the Argentine in a campaign otherwise built on seriously impressive performances against the likes of Gael Monfils and Frances Tiafoe. Cerundolo has reached one previous final on tour, finishing runner-up to Diego Schwartzman at last season’s Buenos Aires Open.
CASPER RUUD
World number eight Casper Ruud claimed the best ranking win of his career with a three-set victory over world number four Alexander Zverev on Wednesday. The 23-year-old had previously beaten then world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Madrid Open last season on his favoured clay but taking out the German on a hardcourt is nothing short of exemplary. Ruud won the seventh ATP 250 title of his career at the Buenos Aires Open last month, with six of that seven coming on clay, but reaching the semi-finals at the ATP Finals on his debut is perhaps his greatest achievement to date.
THE PREDICTION
World number 103 Francisco Cerundolo has cut his ranking by more than half by reaching the semi-finals of the Miami Open. Both he and world number eight Casper Ruud are shock members of the last four, with the expectation that this would be a clash between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev perhaps unfair to two players who have enjoyed excellent campaigns. Cerundolo continues to outdo himself in Miami to make this first meeting with Ruud a tricky fall but surely the Norwegian can oust him after such a result over Alexander Zverev. This match is best kept away from an accumulator but backing Ruud to win outright is, tentatively, the most reasonable outcome.
