THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Frances Tiafoe set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 25th this week after an excellent run to the final of the Estoril Open where he finished runner-up to Sebastian Baez. The American is a solid all-courter but defeating the likes of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Sebastian Korda on clay last week came as something of a surprise and if he can replicate that level he can sweep aside an out-of-sorts Cristian Garin. World number 39 Garin has struggled for much of this season but the Chilean is too good on this surface to stay down for long. The 25-year-old reached the semi-final of the Houston Open last month before losing to John Isner but he has lost in the first round of his next two tournaments to suggest backing Tiafoe outright here is tenable. However, it is always difficult to count on Tiafoe replicating his huge level tournament-to-tournament and Garin’s dormant ability on clay also makes the outright pick a concern. Taking Tiafoe to win at least a set would be the sensible call.
