World number 54 Filip Krajinovic has found some excellent form this week in Rome to beat Frances Tiafoe on Sunday and stun the eighth seed Andrey Rublev in the second round, both in straight sets, The 30-year-old is at his best on clay and well capable of performances like this but it has been three months since he last won back-to-back matches on tour when he reached the semi-finals of the Montpellier Open.
JANNIK SINNER
World number 13 Jannik Sinner overcame a stern test by fellow Italian Fabio Fognini on Wednesday, beating the elder statesman in three sets. The 20-year-old lost in comfortable fashion to Felix Auger-Aliassime at this stage of the Madrid Open last week but he reached the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open last month and took the first set against the second seed Alexander Zverev before losing in three. Sinner’s five ATP titles have so far come on hardcourts but he reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2020 on clay.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a real banana skin for Jannik Sinner if he underestimates the ability of a confident Filip Krajinovic. 30-year-old Krajinovic was a Masters runner-up in 2017 and his straight-sets victory over Andrey Rublev is one of the bigger shocks of the tournament so far, with Sinner occasionally capable of taking his eye off the prize. The Italian beat Krajinovic in straight sets in the semi-finals of the Sofia Open last season on his way to the title there but this should come closer on clay. Back Sinner to win outright here with a decider quite possible.
