THE PREDICTION

World number 39 Dan Evans played well in Washington last week, overcoming the third seed Taylor Fritz in sweltering conditions before losing to Yoshihito Nishioka after three and a half hours on court in the quarter-finals. The 32-year-old lost to Nishioka for a remarkable fifth time last week as his issues against left-handed players continued but the tennis was there for much of the battle, with the Japanese enjoying an impressive run to the final before defeat to Nick Kyrgios. World number 47 Filip Krajinovic is a tough man to predict right now after a hugely surprising run to the Queen’s final on what was previously considered his worst surface, grass, back in June. Straight-set losses first to Matteo Berrettini in that final, Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon and then Carlos Alcaraz at the Hamburg Open makes for a fairly acceptable three-match losing streak and if the Serb can stay positive he looks the just-about favourite here. Krajinovic beat Evans in three sets at the Stockholm Open back in 2019 and taking the 30-year-old to edge this outright seems a reasonable risk outside of an accumulator.
