World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime drew one of the shorter straws at Wimbledon last time out, losing in four sets to Maxime Cressy in the first round. The 21-year-old has the game to one day excel on grass and a semi-final at ‘s-Hertogenbosch coupled with a quarter-final at Halle suggests he is in better form than that previous loss shows. The top seed is still in danger of another upset here, though, against the irrepressible momentum of 29-year-old Jason Kubler, fresh from the biggest run of his injury-hampered career. World number 102 Kubler stunned Dan Evans and Jack Sock at Wimbledon on his way to the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time before losing to Taylor Fritz in straight sets. Kubler has looked well capable of results like that as a former world number one junior but the Aussie has endured more than his fair share of setbacks.
This makes for a real potential upset against Auger-Aliassime, who can often start a tournament slowly. The Canadian is the clear favourite to come through on paper but taking Kubler to win at least as set could be the shrewd move.
