FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME
World number 10 Felix Auger-Aliassime dominated an out-of-sorts Cristian Garin in straight sets on Wednesday, handing the Chilean a second-set bagel. The 21-year-old finally won his first ATP title in his ninth final with victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Rotterdam Open back in February and he reached a 10th final w week later in defeat to Andrey Rublev at the Open 13 in Marseille. Auger-Aliassime has coaching legend Toni Nadal, Rafa’s uncle, in his camp as he aims to improve his game on clay.
JANNIK SINNER
World number 12 Jannik Sinner started the Madrid Open sluggishly in a three-set comeback victory over Tommy Paul but he looked the better for it in a straight-sets victory over Alex de Minaur on Wednesday. The Italian reached the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open on clay last month before losing in three sets to Alexander Zverev but each of his five ATP titles so far have come on hardcourts. 20-year-old Sinner reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2020 as a teenager and he emulated that Grand Slam showing with a run to the last eight at this season’s Australian Open.
THE PREDICTION
This is, surprisingly, the first meeting on tour between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jannik Sinner but certainly not the last with both youngsters set to camp inside the top 20, if not the top 10, for much of the next decade. 20-year-old Sinner is probably the more naturally comfortable player on clay and the Italian has better results on the surface overall but 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime has rightly acknowledge that by working with Toni Nadal over the last year and he has improved greatly on the surface. This first meeting will be as fascinating as it is hard to call but backing Sinner to win at least a set in what could well go to a deciding tiebreak seems the more sensible way to lean.
