THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Dominic Thiem won his only Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2020, beating a teenage Felix Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16. The 30-year-old comes into Melbourne ranked just inside the top 100 after struggling to find anything like his best tennis since returning from a long injury lay-off in late 2022 and it is becoming difficult to see a way back to the top for the popular Austrian. 23-year-old Auger-Aliassime ended last season with a decent burst of form, successfully defending his Swiss Indoors title to save what was proving to be a horror year on tour. The Canadian had enjoyed many years of stable progress before suffering some injury and resultant confidence issues on court but a defeat to Daniel Altmaier in straight sets this week in Auckland does not bode well for his chances here.

Auger-Aliassime made the quarter-finals last season before that severe depreciation in form but making the round of 16 would be a relative surprise this time around. It is hard to recalibrate what we know about the former Dominic Thiem but at this moment in time the former finalist looks short of ideas on court. Back Auger-Aliassime to edge through a scrappy encounter.

TIP: FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME TO WIN
