FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME
World number 10 Felix Auger-Aliassime received a bye to the second round of the Madrid Open as the eighth seed this week. The 21-year-old has so far struggled on clay this swing with a run to the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open the best of his recent results, although he finally broke his title duck by winning a final at the ninth attempt at the Rotterdam Open back in February. Auger-Aliassime took the first two sets against Daniil Medvedev before a five set defeat in the Australian Open quarter-finals at the start of the season soon after winning the ATP Cup with Team Canada.
CRISTIAN GARIN
World number 39 Cristian Garin looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Estoril Open runner-up Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday. The 25-year-old has struggled for form and, when he finds it, consistency this season but a recent run to the semi-finals of the Houston Open last month was encouraging. Garin owns five ATP titles, each on clay, most recently wining the Santiago Open in his native Chile last season.
THE PREDICTION
Cristian Garin made the most of an out-of-sorts and possibly fatigued Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday and he will be a tough force for Felix Auger-Aliassime to stop with some momentum on the Chilean’s favoured surface. Auger-Aliassime still has plenty of room to improve on this surface and Garin leads their head-to-head record 2-1 with all three meetings coming on clay. Most recently, Garin beat the Canadian in straight sets at last season’s Monte-Carlo Open and backing him to win at least a set here looks the shrewd move to leave the winner totally up to chance.
