THE PREDICTION

World number 77 Alexei Popyrin began the long road back from a woeful 2022 season with a shock victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime at Adelaide 1 right at the start of this year and that has, in many ways, set the tone for both of their seasons so far. 23-year-old Popyrin has also upset Taylor Fritz this year for two top 10 wins but he has suffered as many surprising defeats, as has world number 10 Auger-Aliassime. The 22-year-old takes a two-match losing streak into Rome after a tough three-set defeat to in-form Dusan Lajovic at this stage of Madrid two weeks ago and there is little real evidence of his level improving on clay since bringing Toni Nadal into his coaching set up. Auger-Aliassime should be avenging his defeat to Popyrin in straight sets here but the Canadian can often start a tournament slowly and recent form does not bode well at all. Back Popyrin to earn at least a set and consider adding at least a tiebreak in the match in a suitable way to avoid siding with either player fully.
